Painting Course, with Ted Roberts

May 19th - 25th 2012

We are delighted to welcome Ted Roberts to Yavanna. Teaching has been a large part of Ted's life, and since retiring from the classroom after 43 years, teaching Art and Art History and giving lectures and the odd painting class to parents and friends, the idea of giving a course in painting at Yavanna came to him.

Those of you out there who have never thought of taking up the brush, here is your chance! Fear not! You will receive all the support and guidance you could wish for; also you will surprise yourself and come away with memories and a master piece which you will treasure in the years to come.

This painting course is open to all those who have a love or desire to paint.

Previous experience is a help but not a necessity, since Ted believes that in everyone there lies a dormant artist waiting for that moment of awakening, and Yavanna offers the environment an atmosphere to do just that.

The aim of this course will be to teach aspects of observation, composition and use of colour, working with various media, i.e. acrylic, watercolour and pastel.

The day will consist of a morning session (9am - 1pm), with a good coffee break at 11am and lunch at one. Afternoon sessions will be from 3pm - 5pm.

There will of course be individual and group appraisals, with the view that we all learn from each other, no matter what stage of development we are at.

If possible, concluding this week, we will mount an exhibition for a final review. The programme is not carved in stone, and Ted is happy to listen to the potential group for any wishes or hopes they have.

Finally, the surrounding countryside, villages and vineyards offer excellent subject opportunities.

The cost of the course depends on the room you choose. Please click here for more details.

Ted Roberts and his Work

Ted was born in Cheltenham, England in 1941. He spent four years studying painting, sculpture and design at Gloucestershire College of Art, followed by a year's teacher training course. Since then he has taught art to pupils and adults alike. He also lectures on modern art (his particular interest) which has taken him further afield, to New Zealand, Australia, Ireland and the USA.

Major influences on his development as a painter can be traced to twentieth century movements such as the Fauvism, Cubism and Expressionism. Colour has always dominated his work, and he would describe himself as a colourist first and foremost, believing strongly that colour forms a language of its own.

Some of his paintings record the light and experiences of the South of France, others spring directly from the imagination, forming interplay between places seen, memories and imagination. The paintings are allowed to emerge freely, thus lending spontaneity to the subjects.

His brightly coloured canvasses are a celebration of life itself, with intimate glimpses of villages and landscapes, framed by windows of cool blue interiors or sweeping fields, vibrant with light and summer warmth. There are also images of birds, fools and horses; dreamy paintings, quirky and humorous.

See www.tedroberts.co.uk for examples of Ted's work.

Food

Our prices include all facilitation, accommodation, airport transfers, excursions, all meals (apart from one or two taken at a local restaurant), as well as facilities for making tea, coffee, herb teas and snacks as required. Full details here.

Food plays a big part in the painting week!!

Sian, who has cooked at Yavanna for five years, delights in using as much local, organic produce as possible, many from our own organic vegetable garden. Though English, she has lived in Northern Portugal on the Spanish border for a number of years, and creates a delicious fusion of European tastes and flavours. This naturally includes a range of local Portuguese specialities. Vegetarian options are available, and we also try to cater for Vegans and those with other dietary requirements provided we are given plenty of advance notice.

Local aperitifs, ports and wines are included in our prices. If you require any alcohol over and above our standard offerings then we are happy to provide at an additional cost.
